Arguably the part which is most important for your employees themselves, payroll is absolutely not the kind of thing that you want to get wrong. Failing in this department can easily mean that you are going to end up in trouble not just with your own employees, but also potentially the law, and clearly that is not a situation that you really want to find yourself in. Fortunately, keeping your payroll in check is simple as long as you follow a few basic steps. First of all, make sure you are using an appropriate and user-friendly HRIS which you can trust, whether that is an industry standard one like ELMO Software or whichever you prefer. Secondly, don’t underestimate the value of having someone whose job it is solely (or almost solely) to carry out payroll. Having someone be accountable and be able to spend time on it often makes all the difference in the world.


Equality & Discrimination


Another hugely important and relevant concern for all businesses is equality. You need to do whatever is in your power to make sure that you are giving everyone in your employ the equal opportunity to progress, to do their work in safety and without harassment, and in such a way that everyone is treated as fairly as possible. You need to have written codes of conduct in place stopping any discrimination from occurring in the first place, and a clear, accessible complaints and grievances system, should that need to be followed. Failing on any of these fronts would mean overlooking your basic duty of care to your employees.


Hiring & Firing

Obviously, you need to hire enough people, and the kind of people who are likely to work well in specific roles within your business. You also need to make sure that the processes they go through to land the job are fair and that they make sense. Hiring fairly is hugely important, and you should put aside any possibility of discrimination here either. Similarly, you need to have routines in place regarding how you fire people, should you need to. People must know the disciplinary route that all follow, and you can’t simply fire someone on the spot for no reason.
