Indonesia is a collection of diverse and tropical islands situated in Asia. The country has a staggering number of islands within its borders and offers some stunning landscapes, amazing experiences and beautiful weather all year round.

  1. Jakarta

Indonesia’s capital city holds an impressive 10 million people and is the area where all of the cultures, cuisines and traditions mesh into one explosive atmosphere. There are tonnes or restaurants with cuisines from all over the world, amazing landmarks and skyscrapers which look over the city and also some really interesting areas which will take you back in time. If you know anything about the animal kingdom then you can probably predict what is about to be said. Here in Indonesia, the world’s largest lizards exist exclusively on the five islands of  Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar. Komodo dragons are stunning creature and are also incredibly keen hunters. They can even kill a human with their toxic bite. If you want to feel as if you’ve walked into the real world version of Jurassic Park, a visit to any of these islands will give you a feeling you have never had before.

If you love the chance to go for an adventure, the island of Sumatra is the ideal place for you to come. It is a place filled to the brim with wildlife and stunning natural landscapes which will take you as far away from the inner city as you possibly can. You can visit the orangutan of Bukit Lawang, hell to scrub elephants clean and even go hiking across volcanoes. This is truly an island for the avid adventurer and true outdoorsy people. This is also of course the birthplace of the Sumatran Tiger, which you may be hard pushed to see, but you may get lucky during your trip.

If you love diving into the sea off a cliff, then this is definitely the place for you to come on holiday this year. There are lots of places where you can go cliff diving, and if that’s not your thing you can go scuba diving in the Coral Triangle instead. 75% of the world’s coral is found in this area of the world, and there are 2000 species of fish which call it their home. You’ll be able to enjoy crystal clear waters and enjoy a spectacle under the water.

Fun fact: this small island is the most densely populated island on the planet with a staggering 140 million residents. You may think that a visit to this island would be like a visit to your local high street around the Christmas period, but actually there are still many national parks you can explore and get away from the crowds. The main park to visit is Unesco-listed Ujung Kulon which contains volcanoes which you can hike up to and take a look at. Java is also the home to the largest Buddhist temple in the world, Borobudur. This beautiful piece of architecture is situated amongst a wealth of paddy fields and is a place where people go to find some peace and clarity.

If you haven’t heard of many of the islands in this list, then Bali will certainly be a name you recognise. It is one of the most Instagrammed Islands on the planet and is a popular destination for many because of it’s beautiful hikes, flowing waterfalls and great food options. Lombok is an island which is pretty much the same as Bali, but without as much tourism running through it. Lorentz is a Unesco World Heritage site situated on the island of Papua. It is the perfect place to come for a visit if you are an animal lover, as it stretches for over 9600 square miles and is the home of 753 species of mammals and birds.

    My dream is to go to Bali. The tickets to get there from Europe are pretty expensive so I guess maybe next year when I have set a bit of money aside I could spend a few weeks there.
