Tips For Saving Money While Travelling

Going travelling is a great opportunity to explore the world, meet new people and experience new cultures. But it can be expensive, and if you want to prolong your travels for as long as possible, then you need to try and save money where you can.

We’ve created a list of our top tips to help you to save money whilst travelling.

Pack light

You might find it difficult to strip back what you take on your adventure with you, but only taking the necessities and packing light will really help. It will mean avoiding any overweight baggage fees, make it easier to get around, and will help keep costs down when flying on budget airlines.

Choose low cost accommodation

Accommodation is one of the biggest fixed costs you’ll have when travelling. However, there are loads of cheap options out there to help you keep your costs down. Look at local hostels for cheap accommodation where you can meet new people and have fun. If you’re looking for something even cheaper, then consider couch surfing where you can really get to know the locals by staying with one of them.

Eat cheaply

Wherever you choose to stay, look for self-catering options. This will allow you to cook your own meals, saving money on eating out. Buy cheap products that you can make delicious, healthy food with, such as pasta and rice, and bulk it out with seasonal veggies. If you do want to eat out, look for street food options which will enable you to taste the local cuisine for a fraction of the cost of eating at a restaurant. Make sure to also always take snacks with you when you go off exploring for the day, to stop you from having to buy expensive snacks when you’re out.

Find free activities

There are inevitably going to be things on your bucket list that will cost you. But rather than spend loads of money on different activities, explore for free. Look for local free activities, such as museums or events, or simply go out for a walk or a hike to really get a feel for the place. Rather than spending loads of money on different activities, save your money and splash out on just a couple of things that you really want to do. You can still get a great feel for a place on a budget.

Walk or use public transport

Rather than getting taxis or Uber everywhere, walk or take public transport. Have a research to see what public transport options are available, and make sure to pick the cheapest ticket depending on how long you expect to spend there. You’ll feel more like a local when you do this as well, and might even find new experiences you wouldn’t have if you got a taxi.
