Top Scholarships for Graduate students and a special resource for Women in Science

In view of certain recently developments, I decided to do a series of posts for students planning for graduate studies in U.S.A. The series will feature posts ranging from preparing for exams like TOEFL, to applying for graduate assistantships, to the info on education loans and other forms of financial aid for students. The first article of the series features our list of top scholarships compiled by our contributor, Amrita Singh….(the information is from the respective scholarship websites)


Scholarships for Indian students for studying in US:

USA is one of the most sought after study destination among all students across the globe.  The most important factor that attracts a large number of Indian students to study in USA is world-class institutes of higher education.

Scholarship is a financial award based on merit, including outstanding academic performances; special talent is sports or performing arts.

Financial aid is a “need-based” grant based on the student’s financial need. All the students who apply for the financial aids need to submit some documents such as family income, assets, and other factors.

Below is the list of scholarship for Indian students:

  • AAUW International Fellowships

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) International Fellowships are offered to non-US female citizens or permanent residents for pursuing full-time study or research in USA. The fellowships are offered to pursue both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited USA institutions. Recipients of the AAUW International Fellowships are selected on the basis of their academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. Fellowship Value:

Master’s/First Professional Degree: $18,000

Application deadline : December

  • The Fulbright – Nehru Master’s Fellowship

One of the most famous fellowships offered is the Fulbright – Nehru Master’s fellowship for leadership development for talented Indian students who wish to pursue higher education in any stream in the US. The eligibility criteria for this scholarship is given below.

Students must have secured a minimum of 55% from a recognized Indian University.

A four year bachelor’s degree is a mandatory requirement. If the student has a bachelor’s degree less than 3 years, then having at least a minimum of three years of professional work experience to the proposed field of study is a must.

The student must not have a degree from another U.S university.

The age limit is restricted between 25-30 years of age.

Application deadline- July of each year

  • The Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation Scholarship Programme

This scholarship programme awards interest-free loan scholarships to Indian students with a consistently  good academic record.

The scholarships are awarded to students who wish to pursue their postgraduate studies in the fields of Pure Sciences, Applied Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, Law, Architecture and Management at prestigious Indian and international universities.   Indian nationals  residing in India.  Students  below 30 years of age. Graduates of a recognised university (students in the final year of a degree course and those awaiting their results are  also eligible to apply).

The scholarship amount (upto a maximum of Rs. 20 lakhs) is decided as per the assessment of the Foundation.

Application Process Begins in January and last date is Last Date to Apply is till March of each year. 

  • Scholarships by The Rotary Foundation:

This is one of the world’s largest privately funded international scholarships program. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies.

Because timelines vary, only your local club can provide specific information about application deadlines.

  •  ETS TOEFL Scholarship

The scholarship program recognizes students in India who are well-rounded in their academics and in their extra-curricular activities, with a special emphasis on community service. It covers undergraduate or graduate study. Ten scholarships valued at US$7,000 each. Complete the initial application online.

The deadline for the initial application is August of each year.

  • Hubert Humphrey Fellowships in USA for International Students

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program provides a year of professional enrichment in the United States for experienced professionals from designated countries throughout the world.   The Fellowship provides ten months of non-degree academic study and related professional experiences in the United States.  Fellows are selected based on their potential for leadership and their commitment to public service in either the public or private sector. Approximately 200 Fellowships are awarded annually.

The deadlines for applicants vary by country but falls around May to September each year.

  • C. Mahindra Education Trust

Since 1956, K. C. Mahindra Education Trust has granted interest-free loan scholarships to deserving students to pursue post-graduate studies abroad in various fields.

Every year  50 scholarships are offered, as given below:

1) A maximum of Rs.8 lakh per scholar, awarded to the top 3 K.C. Mahindra fellows

2) A maximum of Rs.2 lakh per scholar, awarded to remaining successful applicants

Application opens in January of each year

  • The Lotus Scholarship

The Lotus Scholarship (the Scholarship) is awarded to students who achieve high academic standards and demonstrate a financial need in order to attend University of the West (UWest).


  • The Scholarship is available to new students seeking either bachelor’s degrees or master’s degrees at University of West.

Lotus Gold Scholarship – up to $10,000

Lotus Silver Scholarship – up to $5,000

Application deadline: April/May
