It’s finally over! A comprehensive account of whats it going to be in 2014

It’s going to be a very personal post today.

I have just completed my Masters in Science! These last couple of years felt like an eternity. I presented my MSc thesis “Optimisation of genomic DNA extraction from dioecious medicinal plant, C. grandis for analysis of genetic diversity on the basis of sexual dimorphism by RAPD markers” a couple of days ago and defended it pretty well and the examiner, an expert in the field of Cytogenetics applauded my stand. That feels amazing!

The feeling that I am through and managed to complete it (in spite of a lot of negative external factors)  is yet to sink in. It’s finally goodbye to 16-18 hour lab-work days and endless hours of theory :0

The last couple of months have been very hectic. And apart from tutoring, I could not pursue any of my real interests in my very limited spare time. I am currently undertaking a major re-organisation of my life based on lines that I am no longer a student.

I donated some stuff of regular use like microscope slides, boxes, photographic references from our lab work, graphs, slide kits to my supervising professor’s lab and organised my reference books (some of which I have had since my high school) into 2 piles; one to sell and the other to donate. This is primarily to create space as I transform my room into a temporary work place and also because I now have digital copies of most of the books I require as a reference.

So what now?

Now I can choose to do what I really want to do. Be it running a business, going for a PhD, or working a 9-5 job and of course, reading all the books that I have been forced to put off for the past 8-10 months.

But for the time being, I would rather just access my options and work towards any immediate goals (with long term effects) as I have already laid the foundation.

I might do some travelling for a few months; work online and pay for my food and lodging while I am exploring new places and I intend to stay at each of those place for at least a  week or two and not hop around and scamper across country.

Depends really. I might figure that part out based on the graph of the next 2-3 months.

My priorities changed a lot over the last few months on being in close contact with certain events and circumstances

The reasons which I had earlier considered of a tremendous importance have taken a back seat upon reevaluation.

I can strongly commit to that stand point in view of the fact that I needed a job to pay for a rental property that I wanted to purchase with out a loan. Now that it (purchasing part) didn’t happen (that story for another day), I am simply segregating my funds (earned and saved over 6 years of side hustle as a bachelor’s and there after a master’s student) in the ratio 80: 15: 5 towards house fund, emergency and travel. And since I have build up a somewhat comfortable cushion in the first two arenas (the funds can be used for other purposes if need be ) and am not looking for any property to purchase right now, I am going to put more funds towards travel than anything else for the next few months.

Even so, how exactly are you going to finance all this? This all seems so vague!

Over the past 8 months or so, I have been making as much from my side hustles, a full time job holder with my educational background and working in or a related industry would make. And since I have not been on any vacations for a year *sigh* and have spent mainly on day trips and upgrading my wardrobe, it left a lot of space for savings!

And since these side hustles, mainly tutoring and freelancing, have turned out somewhat profitable, I intent to focus on them for a few more months rather than looking for a full time job which I would not be sticking to in the long run. Apart from that I have utilised all my spare time developing new skills and I am likely to continue doing so right now; just might sprinkle a moderate dose of travel in it and I am set for the rest of the year.

And thereafter?

Depends. I would like to retain my one person “business enterprise”, I like the sound of it, while I am applying for a PhD or another course next year.

I had attuned all my savings/ earnings/ side hustles etc and basic prelim planning to coincide with my MSc so that I would not be left clueless upon completion of the course and would not have to run after a job as my primary resort. And I am glad to see those plans bearing fruits!

Until next time.

  1. Congratulations!! Sounds like a lot of hard work was done on your part. Nice to have the examiner actually applaud your defense 🙂 Good luck on your future endeavors, whatever they may end up being. Take a well-deserved break for now, though, and do what you want 🙂

  2. – congratulations.
having been in similar circumstance can I advise to loosen up a bit and let things come to you when travelling for instance, after your intense pursuit of last few years.
